The history of New Years Eve

It’s thought that New Years Eve was first celebrated around 2000 BC in Mesopotamia, with people taking part in rituals such as crowning kings. It’s said the new year was actually celebrated in March when the Ancient Roman calendar followed the lunar cycle. The decision was then made to follow the solar year, with the new year beginning in January from 46 B.C. One reason for this was to pay respect to the two-faced god Janus, who looked to the past and future simultaneously. It’s believed that the tradition of making New Years Resolutions is linked to the time when the Mesopotamians promised the gods they would improve their behaviour during the following year.
